How Does Nissan’s Intelligent Cruise Control Work?

October 20th, 2021 by

One feature that is becoming more popular is an advanced form of cruise control that Nissan calls Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC, sometimes commonly called adaptive or dynamic cruise control). This highly useful feature isn’t always understood or used correctly, so read on to learn how you can make highway driving and congested traffic much easier!

Nissan’s Intelligent Cruise Control system consists of two main parts: the main system controller, and a front-mounted camera and / or radar sensor. When you’re driving with no other cars on the road, the system acts like most cruise control systems. However, once a car is detected in front of you, the system leaps into action and continuously monitors its distance from your car. Once you set how much of a distance you’d like to keep between that car and your own, the system will slow down or speed up to maintain that distance (up to the top speed you’ve set). If the car in front of you comes to a stop, the system will bring you to a stop and shut itself off. When you’re on the highway, this system lets you relax and focus on the drive without worrying about resetting your cruise control or going above the speed limit, but this is only one way to use the system!

Great Times to use Intelligent Cruise Control

  • Slow moving traffic. If you’re in stop-and-go traffic on the highway, set the system to keep maximum distance and a slow speed. If the car in front stops, you’ll safely creep forward until the system stops you, minimizing braking and maximizing fuel efficiency.
  • Speed traps. Navigation apps usually alert you to speed traps, but other drivers like to slow down a bit too much. Nissan’s ICC will keep you from slamming on the brakes or worrying about getting that dreaded ticket.

Intelligent Cruise Control is a great system designed to reduce driver fatigue, but it does have its limits. Inclement weather can obscure the camera or radar, causing the system to malfunction. Plus, no automated system can replace an attentive and experienced driver, so don’t make the mistake of thinking you can take your hands off the wheel!
