EV, Plugin Hybrid, What’s the Difference? | Gonzales, LA
The past few years have seen significant performance improvements to traditional gas engines as well as alternative fuel and electric vehicle options. But what’s the difference between all of these new engines, and are these new types for you?
EV
- Stands for Electric Vehicle
- Powered mainly by battery
- Useful mainly for commuting or short trips around town
- Must be charged for several hours to fill up
Plugin Hybrid
- A gas- and electric-powered vehicle
- Can operate off of its battery entirely
- Uses a small gas engine for performance or range
- Can charge through gas engine or by plugging it into an outlet
Hybrid
- Any vehicle that uses both gas and electricity for power
- Battery is generally charged by the gas engine
- Usually doesn’t need to / can’t be plugged in
Alternative Fuel
- A vehicle that uses an alternative fuel source, generally hydrogen or natural gas
- These vary significantly, and are an evolving vehicle type
